Jupiter Medical Center Auxiliary’s Motor AidPerhaps the most greatly appreciated community service is the Auxiliary’s Motor Aid. Area residents are shuttled round-trip, free of charge from home to the hospital and the offices of doctors who are on staff at Jupiter Medical Center. Infirmed, elderly and “non-driving” patients describe this service as a “life line” to securing critical medical treatments and retaining an independent, dignified lifestyle. Perhaps equally as important, it transfers the “shuttle” responsibility from family care providers such as spouse or adult, working children to a reliable outside source.
Patients merely phone in advance to schedule transportation. Transportation can be scheduled on a one-time basis or on a repeating schedule for patients receiving multi-session treatments such as physical therapy, chemo-therapy or rehabilitation. Physician offices and hospital departments providing services can also request this service on behalf of a patient. The Motor Aid service is funded by our Auxiliary-operated, revenue-generating services: The Thrift Shop, Gift Shop and Estate Sales Service. New mini-vans are purchased regularly to maintain the four van fleet. In 2001, the Auxiliary’s Motor Aid transported 560 community residents to over 3800 appointments and traveled over 72,000 miles. Every one of those miles puts a smile on the face of a patient! Auxilians who volunteer to work in Motor Aid are Jupiter Medical Center’s “Road Heroes”. They provide a vital community service by insuring medical treatments are received by the non-driving community.
