Employee Spotlight: Mindy Levine, Executive Assistant

The constant strive for success is integral to the success of any organization. Through the individuals at Jupiter Medical Center, this strive is coupled with a familial atmosphere in each and every department, whether clinical or administrative. At JMC, employees are the heartbeat of the hospital. They are a tightly knit group, united by their common goal to deliver their very best each and every day. Mindy Levine is a shining example of this organizational philosophy.

Like so many South Florida residents, Mindy migrated from the Northeast. She grew up in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, in New York. She worked in Manhattan and obtained her Associates Degree in Applied Science cum laude, with a major in Legal Procedures. After college, she remained in New York, working for a very large law firm. As is often the case with New Yorkers, the intensity of the city left her desiring a quieter, more peaceful life. "At that time, my husband and I decided to move to South Florida and get out of the grind of New York." They moved to Southwest Miami, eventually making their way up the coast to Boca Raton, then Jupiter to raise their two sons, ages 15 and 20.

Unlike many members of the JMC family, Mindy's background was not based in healthcare. A legal assistant for 22 years, Mindy had plenty of law experience, but no healthcare experience. After so much time spent in the legal field, Mindy wanted to explore other options. She wanted to do something new, and a timely tennis match with a JMC nurse led Mindy to JMC.

"Over a game of tennis, my friend mentioned that the Executive Assistant to the CEO was retiring after 20-plus years. I made the decision to go for it. A couple weeks later, the CEO called and said he was looking for someone with legal experience. That worked out great, and I never looked back. That was probably the best decision I ever made," she said.

As the Executive Assistant to the CEO, Mindy is responsible for administrative duties for the CEO, Board of Trustees and the Corporate Membership. She prepares all the materials for meetings and events, and composes correspondence for the CEO and Board Chairman. With all her responsibilities, she is required to possess many skills, including a level of independence and judgment, interpersonal skills to deal with patients and their families, the medical staff and the many other JMC departments, and an understanding of various healthcare issues and the industry at large. "I consider myself a liaison between the CEO, the Board of Trustees, and the community, and believe my role is also to sustain the positive reputation of JMC."

Mindy is currently one of only 25 administrative professionals across the country who has achieved the designation of Certified Healthcare Administrative Professional (CHAP) issued by the Association of Healthcare Administrative Professionals (AHCAP), a society of the American Hospital Association. The certification exemplifies proficiency in healthcare governance, joint commission, Microsoft applications, grammar and composition. In other words, she has the full range of knowledge and skills required to be one of the elite healthcare administrative professionals in the country!  Mindy has also served on the Board of AHCAP as well as on the Annual Conference Planning Committee for several years.

Coming from the big city life of New York, Mindy was pleasantly surprised at what she and her family found in Jupiter. An avid fan of the theater and performing arts, she is a season ticket holder at the Maltz Theater. "Jupiter is a big, little town. It's as quiet as you want it to be, yet it's not far from the performing arts of West Palm Beach or the much more intimate Maltz Theater. You have nearby access to everything, but if you want a quiet life, you can have that too." Living in South Florida also allows Mindy and her older son to pursue one of her favorite hobbies. A certified scuba diver, she and her husband, Alan and their children spend many holiday weekends in the Florida Keys.

Mindy recognizes the atmosphere amongst co-workers and patients at JMC as truly unique and special. "You'll always hear people say that this is a family environment, and it really is in every sense. It's a wonderful place to work and I hope to finish my career here. My work is very satisfying and we're treated well and offered a lot of great benefits."

In many of her past positions, Mindy's daily commute to and from work was much longer than her current ten-minute drive to JMC. This may seem like it would be near the top of Mindy's list of reasons she loves to work at JMC. "The fact that I'm close to home is not something I would include as being a benefit because it didn't drive my decision to come to work at Jupiter Medical Center," she said. "I was just fortunate that JMC was in my back yard."
