Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

Integrative Medicine is an approach to medical care focusing on the whole person and recognizing the interactions of mind, body and spirit to optimize health and healing. Every year, millions of people see a health care professional for symptoms that diagnostic tests can't explain. In many of these patients, the cause of the illness is stress, particularly stress that isn't fully recognized. Managing stress is all about taking charge of your thoughts, emotions, and the way you deal with problems.

In 1979, Jon Kabat-Zinn founded the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center to bring a form of meditation practice known as mindfulness into mainstream medicine and healthcare. The Center for Mindfulness is an innovative leader in mind-body medicine and mindfulness-based treatment and research investigation, pioneering the integration of meditation and mindfulness into mainstream medicine and health care.

Jupiter Medical Center has partnered with the University of Massachusetts Medical Center's Center for Mindfulness to offer Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). MBSR is a comprehensive, eight-week training in mindfulness meditation, based on ancient healing practices.

MBSR is ideal for cultivating greater awareness of the unity of mind and body. The mind is known to be a factor in stress and stress-related disorders, and meditation has been shown to positively affect a range of physiological processes, such as lowering blood pressure and reducing overall emotional reactivity. MBSR is designed to help you achieve health and well-being in the face of stress, pain or illness.

The stress reduction program has benefited people reporting a variety of conditions and concerns:

Stress including: work, school, family, financial, illness, aging, grief, uncertainty about the future and feeling “out of control”

Medical conditions including: chronic illness or pain, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, cancer, heart disease, asthma, GI distress, skin disorders, and many other conditions.

Psychological distress including: anxiety, panic, depression, fatigue, and sleep disturbances

Prevention & Wellness including: health enhancement and wellness focused on prevention and learning the “how” of taking good care of yourself and feeling a greater sense of balance.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is highly respected within the medical community. It is not offered as an alternative to traditional medical and psychological treatments but as a complement to these.
