In addition to our state-of-the art inpatient surgical facilities, Same Day Surgery at Jupiter Medical Center offers the advantages of superior surgical care affiliated with a hospital, in a convenient, specialized facility.
Same Day Surgery is a planned, elective surgery (not emergency surgery), which your physician has recommended, and you have chosen.
Same Day Surgery, which is also known as outpatient or ambulatory surgery, is appropriate for more than 400 surgical procedures, which do not require an overnight stay in the hospital.
The Same Day Surgery unit is designed to meet the needs of short-term surgery patients. Admission, surgery, and discharge to home all take place on the same day. With Same Day Surgery, you recuperate at home, in familiar surroundings, and spend less time away from work and your family.
Our Same Day Surgery unit gives you the assurance of knowing that you have the complete resources of Jupiter Medical Center immediately accessible - for your peace of mind.
Types of procedures performed at the Surgery Center include:

Fast Track is an option for certain patients who do not need a preoperative visit. Patients who qualify for this service will receive a phone call from a preoperative nurse to collect your health history information.
We begin caring for you even before you arrive at our Same Day Surgery unit. When your physician's office schedules your operation with Same Day Surgery at Jupiter Medical Center, they will also arrange for a pre-surgery visit (usually two to seven days before your operation.)
During the pre-surgery visit, you will be interviewed by an anesthesiologist, and a Same Day Surgery nurse. You may also have necessary lab work, an EKG, or a chest X-ray performed at this time (*most HMO's require testing be completed by your primary care physician or at a designated lab).
The nurse and an anesthesiologist will interview you, discuss your pre-operative and discharge instructions, and answer any of your concerns. You will also be asked to sign a consent form authorizing your surgery. For patients under 18 years of age, a parent or guardian must sign the consent form.
You should arrive at the Same Day Surgery unit at your scheduled time. Please leave all valuables at home. Also, please bring with you a list of your current medications. For your convenience, click on the Medication List Card link and you can print out the medication card form and bring the completed form with you on the day of surgery.
Please arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home within one to three hours after surgery. After you arrive, you will be escorted to the pre-operative area where you will change from street clothes into a patient gown. This area affords patients the utmost privacy, with three-walled "roomettes" that have individual televisions and telephones. Whenever possible, family may stay with you until it is time for your transfer to the operating room. Your nurse will check your chart and prepare you for surgery. You will also be interviewed once again, and visited by an anesthesiologist and a nurse anesthetist. It is vitally important that you follow all pre-surgery instructions; otherwise, surgery may need to be postponed.
Your length of stay in Same Day Surgery will vary, depending on the type of procedure you have. Following your surgery, you may be taken to the recovery room and monitored until the surgeon or anesthesiologist determines that you are ready to go home.
Children who have surgery may be accompanied by their parents in the pre-operative and recovery areas, as permitted.
The anesthesiologist will review your medical history during your pre-surgery visit and again at the time of your surgery. Please report any changes in your physical condition that arise after your pre-surgery visit. This information is necessary for the anesthesiologist to provide appropriate medical care for your safety and well-being. Pain during surgery is prevented by anesthesia.
Following surgery, you will be taken to the Recovery Room (PACU) where the nurses and anesthesiologist will monitor you carefully as you wake up from anesthesia. The time you spend in the recovery area will depend on the surgery and your general condition. When you are awake and your vital signs are stable, a member of the nursing staff will prepare you for discharge.
Occasionally, some Same Day Surgery patients require extended observation following their operation. To provide for this type of care, observation beds are available in the hospital itself. If extended observation is required following your surgery, you will be transferred from Same Day Surgery to a nursing floor in the hospital. A benefit most patients appreciate is that Jupiter Medical Center has all private rooms.
Your discharge will be arranged according to your physician's instructions. For your comfort and safety, do not drive, operate machinery, drink alcoholic beverages, or take any medication not prescribed by your physician for at least 24 hours following discharge.
The staff at Jupiter Medical Center wants to make your Same Day Surgery experience as pleasant as possible. If you have any questions concerning Same Day Surgery, please contact your physician or Same Day Surgery at 561-263-4424.
