Early Detection –
Ongoing Cancer Screenings
Comprehensive Lung Cancer
Screening Program
Because
early lung cancer detection and
treatment is critical for improved survival rates, Jupiter Medical
Center is continuing its campaign against the number
one cause of cancer death in men and women with a Lung Screening
Program, featuring a monthly comprehensive lung screening clinic.
The JMC program is
unique because it treats the patient in all aspects of care featuring:
- A CT lung
screening offering instant results.
- A diagnosis
including consultation with a pulmonologist, and any necessary
follow-up and treatment.
- A recovery
program that includes a visit with a trained smoking cessation
counselor and smoking cessation support group program which is the
only one of its kind in Palm Beach County.
The program’s goal
is to reveal lung cancer in high-risk persons in its earlier, possibly
curable stages. Research shows that an initial "baseline" screening of
high-risk persons by low-dose advanced CT can detect lung cancer at
earlier and more curable stages than ordinary x-ray.
Current smokers and
former heavy smokers over the age of 40 are eligible for the screening
program, which is being offered at a discounted rate of $299. Any
necessary follow-up exams to evaluate suspicious lesions may be eligible
for insurance reimbursement.
Lung cancer is among
the most common cancers in the Western world, and according to the
National Institutes of Health, cigarette smoking accounts for 90% of all
lung cancers.
Findings from the U.S. National Cancer Institute indicate
that the upward trend in cancer-related death is due to the rapidly
increasing rate of lung cancer mortality.
Prostate Screening
Annually in
February, the Foshay Cancer Center hosts an afternoon of complimentary
prostate cancer screenings for the community. The screening includes a
PSA blood test and digital rectal exam. Several Board Certified
Urologists are involved in the screenings which are available by
appointment only.
Skin
Cancer Screening
May is
National Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. In recognition of
this month, community members are encouraged to take advantage of a free
skin cancer screening hosted by the Foshay Cancer Center’s Radiation
Oncology Department. Typically a Board Certified Dermatologist and a
Plastic Surgeon participate in the screenings. Appointments are
required.
