Computed Tomography (CT), also known as a “CAT Scan”, is a medical diagnostic tool that allows the visualization of structures within the human body. This aids physicians in diagnosing disease, viewing internal abnormalities and assessing the extent of trauma damage.Non-invasive 64 slice CT imaging technologies continue to revolutionize every subspecialty of medicine. Cardiology is no different; new imaging devices have shown enormous promise to diagnose a variety of cardiovascular abnormalities. This System offers particular advantages for assessing the cardiovascular system, delivering a comprehensive view of the heart and coronary arteries within five seconds (or five beats of the heart), essentially a quadrupling of the number of available thin slices over previous systems.

The LightSpeed VCT 64 Slice system can deliver up to 73 percent more coverage per second of a given region of interest over previous CT technology. This system’s speed dramatically reduces artifacts due to patient motion (either voluntary or involuntary, e.g., heartbeats). This capability opens new diagnostic possibilities for the clinician. For example, a complete coronary angiogram can be acquired within five heartbeats, and physicians can quickly rule out (or in) the three life-threatening (aortic dissection, pulmonary embolism, coronary artery disease) causes of ER chest pain in one non-invasive scan. The system’s speed also makes stroke workups more routine.

Less is More
Additionally, the LightSpeed VCT system achieves all this with a significant reduction in radiation to the patient by removing from the X-ray beam “scatter radiation” or electrons that do not contribute to the image itself. LightSpeed VCT’s features also allow physicians to perform other studies more efficiently, including those for neurology, oncology, trauma and angiography. Along with new procedures, doctors have the flexibility to customize protocols for each unique patient, thereby enhancing productivity and image quality.
