Novel Treatments for Non-Cancer Lung Diseases

Surgical Innovations and a Quicker Return to Everyday Life

For patients with lung disease that is not linked to cancer, innovative surgical techniques offer less invasive options, usually resulting in shorter hospital stays, less post-operative pain, and a faster return to everyday living and normal activities. Techniques include:

  • Bronchial Lung Volume Reduction is for patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or emphysema. The minimally invasive Zephyr Endobronchial Valve treatment blocks diseased parts of the lung by inserting four tiny valves into deficient airways via a bronchoscope. The valves block lung tissue that is diseased, allowing healthier lung tissues to expand and take in more air.
  • Bronchial Thermoplasty is an outpatient procedure that provides long-term relief to patients with asthma. Using controlled radiotherapy, specialists use heat to weaken muscle fibers in the lungs that are linked to bronchial spams. The weakened tissue is less able to limit the flow of oxygen in and out of the lungs — an intervention that supports easier breathing.
