3-D mammography (tomosynthesis) is a leading-edge technology that increases
diagnostic accuracy and has been shown to decrease the need for additional
imaging and unnecessary biopsies, getting it right the first time. This
technology is extremely useful for women who have dense breast tissue.
On a traditional mammogram, dense breast tissue appears white and sometimes
can hide masses, such as cancer. 3-D mammography overcomes this obstacle.
3-D mammography allows our radiologists to examine breast tissue layer
by layer, one millimeter at a time. Instead of viewing all of the complexities
of breast tissue in a flat image, as with traditional 2-D mammography,
fine details are more visible and are no longer hidden by tissue above
or below. Radiologists are able to see suspicious areas more clearly,
decreasing the need to come back for additional imaging or unnecessary biopsies.
Research has shown up to a 40% reduction in women being called back for
additional imaging and it detects more than 41% more invasive breast cancers
than 2-D mammography.
Patients report that the ergonomic design of this system helps deliver
a more comfortable experience. And, this system offers the lowest possible
radiation dose from its advanced detector technology.
All of this combined gives us the tools we need to help improve the detection
of breast cancer at its earliest, most treatable, stage. Early detection
increases a woman’s chance of being cured.
