Safety Measures & Prevention

Help Stop Coronavirus

There is a lot we can do to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe from COVID-19. Following social distancing guidelines, paying extra attention to hand hygiene, and wearing a facemask have all been shown to reduce the risk of infection.

Each of us has a part to play in preventing the spread of coronavirus. Staying at home when possible, keeping a safe distance, washing your hands often, and wearing a facemask when in public are some of the key steps.

  1. Wash Your Hands Frequently. Proper handwashing technique removes germs. Wash often.
  2. Avoid Touching Your Face. Your hands accumulate germs. Touching your face, mouth or eyes can transfer the germs to you.
  3. Cover Your Cough or Sneeze. Use a tissue to cover your cough, then dispose of it. Or, cough into your upper sleeve.
  4. Stay Home When You Are Sick. COVID-19 spreads person to person. Stay home from work and don’t run errands when you’re ill.
  5. Avoid Close Contact With Those Who Are Sick. Choose a room in your home that can be used to separate anyone in your household with COVID-19 symptoms from others.
  6. Clean and Disinfect Frequently Touched Items. Use a disinfectant on tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.

Simple and Effective

Washing your hands is one of the best ways to prevent COVID-19. Wet your hands with running water, warm or cold. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. Scrub for at least 20 seconds. Rinse and dry your hands.

How to Clean and Disinfect

  • Hard Surfaces. Wear disposable gloves; discard afterward. Common household cleaners and disinfectants should be sufficient. Or, use diluted bleach (5 Tablespoons per gallon of water).
  • Linens & Clothing. Wear disposable gloves if handling laundry from an ill person. Do not shake laundry and wash in the warmest appropriate setting for the items.
  • Electronics. Follow the manufacture’s cleaning instructions for phones, tablets, remote controls, and keyboards. Or, use alcohol-based wipes or sprays containing at least 70% alcohol. Dry thoroughly.

Safety Measures

The Jupiter Medical Center team has developed and implemented a comprehensive plan to screen, isolate and treat COVID-19 patients while continuing to provide the highest quality care for our patients who need medically necessary treatments.

Here are highlights of the comprehensive measures we have taken so that we may provide vital healthcare services to our community and protect our patients and team member from COVID-19.

Preparing in Advance

Jupiter Medical Center began preparing in January to receive COVID-19 patients and to protect our other patients and team members from this new virus. We were one of the first hospitals in our region to implement CDC guidelines for the screening, diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 patients.

To prepare our staff, we conducted multidisciplinary training drills for screening, diagnosing, isolating and treating potential cases of COVID-19. Training included the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended guidelines. We also established an Incident Command Center to streamline communications and provide administrative oversight to manage treatment, clinical staffing and the allocation of rooms, equipment and supplies.

Thermal Temperature Screening

Jupiter Medical Center uses Care.ai facial scanning systems to conduct thermal temperature screening at facility entry points. The sensors check the body temperature of anyone entering the hospital, including patients, vendors, physicians and all team members. The sensors are positioned at each entrance to identify anyone with a fever, accurately and with no contact between patients and staff.

To reduce the potential of COVID-19 spread, Jupiter Medical Center also implemented a “no visitor” policy, with some exceptions, including pediatric and labor & delivery patients. Hospice visits are allowed on a limited basis. The visitor policy changes were not made lightly, as we understand that spending time with family and friends is of great comfort to our patients when they are ill or being treated for a medical situation.

Rigorous Cleaning and Disinfection

In addition to our already rigorous infection prevention procedures, we have implemented additional cleaning and disinfecting of all surfaces and in all patient areas. Our Environmental Services team continues to round patient care areas three times each day to clean and disinfect high-touch areas. We are also using Tru-D SmartUVC ultra-violet disinfection robots, which inactivate viruses and other pathogens on surfaces.

Virtual Care From the Comfort of Home

With Care Anywhere, connect with a Jupiter Medical Center Urgent Care provider from the comfort of home, using your mobile device or your desktop computer. Care Anywhere telehealth consultations are available 7 days a week.

Accelerated Testing for Hospitalized Patients

Jupiter Medical Center uses a new respiratory panel permitted by the FDA under an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA), to test patients for COVID-19, flu and other respiratory pathogens immediately upon admission to the emergency department.

The new testing advancement allows Jupiter Medical Center providers to rule out a patient for COVID-19 infection in less than one hour. This enables our providers to make treatment recommendations for our patients more rapidly, ensuring they receive the best care for their illness or condition. Jupiter Medical Center can also test for antibodies to COVID-19. Antibody tests are used to detect previous COVID-19 exposures.
