Radiation Oncology
The Radiation Oncology Department at Jupiter Medical Center is the cornerstone
of our comprehensive cancer program. As a hospital-based cancer center,
we offer patients world-class treatment options and support services.
Our radiation oncologists have expertise in treating all types of cancers
with extensive experience in stereotactic radiosurgery.
Our Quality
The Radiation Oncology Department at Jupiter Medical Center is one of only
two centers in Palm Beach County accredited by the American College of
Radiology (ACR). Our cancer program is accredited with commendation by
the Commission on Cancer (CoC) and by the National Accreditation Program
for Breast Centers (NAPBC), meeting or exceeding rigorous standards required
by these organizations. Seeking care at an accredited facility offers
you comprehensive care including a complete range of leading-edge services
and technology.
Our State-of-the-Art Treatments and Technologies
-
TrueBeam Radiotherapy System: Used to treat many types of cancers, the TrueBeam™ precisely targets
tumors with high doses of radiation while minimizing exposure to healthy
surrounding tissue. The TrueBeam treats cancers of the head, neck, lungs,
abdomen, breast, liver, pelvis and prostate. Equipped with advanced imaging
technology, the TrueBeam radiotherapy system can track slight movements
of the tumor that occur when a patient breathes, and adjusts the beam
to deliver the radiation to the cancerous cells.
-
CyberKnife® M6™: Patients can complete treatment in one to five days, compared to the weeks
it takes to complete a course of conventional radiation therapy. It is
also an option for patients who have inoperable or surgically complex
tumors, or who may be looking for an alternative to surgery.
-
Electron Beam Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (e-IORT): Treatment includes combining therapy with an initial, concentrated dose
of radiation. In the best of cases, this single dose of radiation will
be all a patient needs. For others, this breakthrough will cut in half
their required course of radiation treatment.
-
Bionix® Prone Breast System: Jupiter Medical Center’s Radiation Oncology Center is one of the
few facilities in the area to offer the Bionixprone breast system. Created
with a focus on ensuring patient comfort, accuracy and ease of use, this
system reduces irradiation to the chest wall, healthy cardiac tissue and
the lungs. The system also reduces skin folds in large breasted women
which decreases skin reactions throughout their course of radiation therapy.
-
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) with Image Guided Radiation
Therapy (IGRT): IMRT with IGRT treatment technology allows precise targeting of cancerous
tissues while helping spare adjacent normal organs. IMRT is a method of
shaping the radiation beam while treatment is being delivered. Our center
is equipped with the Varian RapidArc system, which allows the delivery
of the entire daily radiation treatment in as little as 90 seconds.
-
High Dose Rate Brachytherapy System (HDR): HDR technology uses a computer-controlled radioactive source for rapid
delivery of pinpoint doses of radiation, limiting radiation exposure to
normal tissues. We use this to treat many gynecologic cancers including
cervical and endometrial cancers. For the appropriate patient this can
shorten treatment times from the traditional six or seven weeks to just
five days.
-
Superficial Electron Beam Therapy: Electrons are a type of radiation particle that can be carefully tailored
to destroy superficial cancers. Radiation therapy with electron beam treatment
allows many skin cancer patients to avoid surgery and the risks of anesthesia,
incisions or infection with excellent cosmetic results.
-
SpaceOAR Hydrogel: SpaceOAR hydrogel is an absorbable hydrogel that temporarily creates
space between the prostate and the rectum, protecting the rectum from
radiation exposure during prostate radiation therapy. Acting as a spacer,
the hydrogel pushes the rectum a half inch away from the prostate so damage
to the rectum is reduced or even eliminated. SpaceOAR hydrogel can be
used in all types of radiation therapy including external radiation, internal
radiation and stereotactic body radiation.
The Radiation Oncology Team
While advanced technology is vitally important, we also focus on what is
equally important – a team approach to cancer care. Our board certified
radiation oncologists, radiation specialty nurses, therapists, dosimetrists,
physicists, psychosocial and nutritional support professionals provide
unparalleled management and support of patients from diagnosis through
treatment and survivorship.
