What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease characterized by high blood sugar, which can be diagnosed with a simple blood test. Diabetes can be controlled through a balance of diet, exercise, blood glucose monitoring and medication. Diabetes affects over 29 million Americans. Another 86 million have pre-diabetes, the state that occurs when a person’s blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes. Millions of people are unaware that they have high blood sugar or don’t recognize the symptoms. Early detection and treatment are vital. Once diagnosed, people with diabetes can learn to effectively manage their disease and lead normal, healthy lives.
