Gestational Diabetes Management Program

Gestational diabetes is a temporary condition in which the body of a pregnant woman doesn’t produce enough insulin. When you’re pregnant, hormonal changes can make your cells less responsive to insulin. If your pancreas doesn’t keep up with the increased insulin demand during pregnancy, your blood glucose levels will increase, resulting in gestational diabetes.

Jupiter Medical Center’s Diabetes Education Department offers a Gestational Diabetes Management Program which includes:

  • Individual consultation provided by a registered nurse, and a registered dietitian who are both Certified Diabetes Educators and bilingual (Spanish/English)
  • An overview of gestational diabetes
  • Blood glucose monitoring (free glucose meter given)
  • Ketone testing
  • Exercise
  • Meal planning
  • Lifestyle changes to prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes
  • Insulin instruction or insulin pump if indicated

A physician prescription and recent lab reports are required to set up your consultation.
A progress note and management plan will be sent to your physician after the initial consultation.
