Frequently Asked Questions

What is prehab?

Patients preparing for joint replacement surgery may be referred for prehospital joint replacement rehabilitation (prehab). Prehab is a proactive approach to prepare your muscles for surgery through physical and lifestyle changes designed to improve your postoperative recovery time. Studies have found that patients who participate in prehab before surgery recover faster than those who don’t.

Why do I need prehab?

  • Prevention: Prehab addresses muscular imbalances by building strength in the most vulnerable areas that are stressed in every day movement: your hips, core and shoulders, making you resistant to injury and long-term muscle deterioration.
  • Presurgery: The healthier you are before surgery directly affects your recovery. Prehab can reduce rehabilitation time and improve outcomes by building stronger surrounding muscles that will support injured and post-surgical structures better than weaker ones.

Returning to daily activities without pain is the ultimate goal of surgery. Our patient-centered staff is highly focused on your rapid return to work, hobbies and sports while protecting the integrity of the surgical repair. Our rehab programs are based on restoring function using evidence-based protocols designed for the individual needs of each patient.

Remember - the single most important participant in your health care team is you! Much of the success of your joint replacement surgery depends upon your own motivation and commitment to making a quick recovery. We strive to educate you about your condition and postoperative protocols so that you have the tools to be active in your own recovery.

How do I get prehab?

Prehab may be covered by your insurance carrier. A prescription for physical therapy is required. You will be evaluated by a physical therapist and our rehab and wellness team will customize a prehab program for you with an emphasis on physical activity, increasing aerobic capacity and muscle, and core strength.
