Linda O’Meara
Age at Diagnosis: 46 and 65
My family history was strong for breast cancer. I was vigilant at self
breast exams and had begun getting mammograms at age 37. When I found
a lump in my breast at 46, I underwent a lumpectomy, a month of radiation
and six rounds of chemotherapy. As years went by, the standards for follow-up
changed. I began getting MRIs and mammograms on an annual basis. More
cases appeared in my family. Now first cousins were being diagnosed with
breast cancer, ovarian and pancreatic cancers. We started getting tested
for the BRAC genes. Many of us are positive for BRAC 2. It was then recommended
I get my ovaries surgically removed, and I did. At 65, the MRI showed
the very beginning of a second breast cancer, and I chose a double mastectomy
with reconstruction as treatment. Good choices for me!
I have always been known for wearing red lipstick. It has become my signature,
as I wear it daily. After my second breast cancer diagnosis, my red lipstick
became different, transitioning from my style staple to a sense of empowerment
and womanhood. I still wear it today as a reminder that cancer can ‘Kiss
My ---!’
Message to other women:
Don’t ignore your body, being vigilant.
