In August of 2018, I went in for a routine mammogram, and it showed something
suspicious. After undergoing two biopsies, I was diagnosed with breast
cancer. I was referred to Dr. Nancy Taft, medical director of Jupiter
Medical Center’s Comprehensive Breast Program, and I also met Donna
Skillings, RN, nurse navigator. It was recommended that I see a medical
oncologist and under her direction, I had a course of six chemotherapy
treatments every three weeks in an effort to reduce the size of my tumor.
After chemotherapy was completed, I had an MRI, which showed a huge reduction
in the size of the tumors. Dr. Taft performed a lumpectomy in January
of 2019 and after surgery I was cancer-free. I later had a series of 20
radiation treatments, and I continue to have Herceptin infusions every
three weeks as the cancer was triple positive. Non-cancer related (but
possibly aggravated by chemo), I have also had three crowns and one hip
replacement during this time.
I have a wonderful team of health care professionals, as well as the support
of my teenage daughter, family and friends. I’m starting to feel
a return to myself and this brings me so much gratitude.
