I’m a 71-year-old mother of two daughters and have seven wonderful
grandchildren. I was first diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of
43. It was quite a surprise at that age! I had a lumpectomy and did well
until I was 61 and had a recurrence. I then chose to undergo a mastectomy
without reconstruction. I’ve been on hormone therapy, immunotherapy
and had several CyberKnife procedures.
I’ve been very fortunate and am doing well. I love playing bridge
and mahjong and I’m an avid gardener and bird watcher (especially
cardinals). I have a loving, supportive family and a wonderful circle
of friends and fellow survivors. I am grateful for every day!
My message for other women:
Get yearly mammograms. Treatment options for breast cancer have improved
greatly since 1990. Have hope. Take one day at a time!
