I am 57 years old, married with three children and four grandchildren and
am a registered nurse. I enjoy biking, walking and the beach and have
recently taken up gardening.
I was diagnosed at the age of 57 when a routine mammogram detected DCIS.
Fortunately it was early stage, treatment involved a lumpectomy, radiation
therapy for four weeks and hormone treatment for five years.
As much as I disliked mammograms, I feel it saved me from a possible mastectomy
and even my life. I did not search for support groups, because I was so
fortunate to have a wife who is a nurse and many family and friend surrounding
me with so much love that I am forever grateful for. The Margaret W. Niedland
Breast Center has an amazing staff, helping me every step of the way.
With an outstanding support program, I received the ultimate care anyone
could ask for and I am truly grateful.
The theme of my chair is gardening. Spending many days at home recovering,
I would sit on my patio. Over the years my wife and I spent many hours
planting flowers, trees and buying pretty, colorful pots to put our plants
in. We have two water fountains and assorted decorations that add a nice
touch. There is always something to do, plant and learn in a garden. I
always felt a comfort and appreciation for God’s blessings around me.
