Margo Bucchi
My name is Margo. I’m a mom of three young adult children and I’ve
been a real estate agent for 17 years. My breast cancer journey began
in September 2017 when I felt a lump in my left breast. I didn’t
think much about it, but my mom was a breast cancer survivor I made the
choice to have it checked. So after a few phone calls and is switching
doctors I saw a doctor Ianoconne. He was one of the most compassionate
doctors I have ever met. Before he even came in the room I had a sense
of my fate. Once he examined me he said that I had a cyst but there was
also another area of concern that I needed to have a checked. He brought
me down the hall told me to have a seat and proceeded to get me scheduled
right away at the Margaret Niedland Breast Center. It was Friday and he
actually scheduled me for Monday. Needless to say I was very concerned.
I went to the Niedland Center and after several tests I was eventually
told that I had breast cancer. Being the family advocate for mammograms
and having had my mammogram not even a year before I wasn’t quite
sure how this could happen. But here I was, now what do I do? At that
moment I made the choice to not let this define me and that I would do
what I needed to do to get through it. I was introduced to a wonderful
woman named Donna Skillings who became my nurse navigator, she was like
a guardian angel and I’m so grateful to have her guidance and support.
She coordinated all my doctors appointments and provided a great deal
of support.
After a horrible bout with chemo that landed me in the hospital for several
days, and terrifying my family and friends I needed to rethink how I was
going to move forward. I met with Dr. Nancy Taft who did my left mastectomy
and removed nine of my lymph nodes. It was my understanding that the surgery
was a bit complicated. After some time healing my daughter and one of
her friends asked if they could take me to a prayer group to pray for
me. I was deeply touched. When we got there, they prayed for me and I
felt the cancer leave my body and I truly believed within that I was cured.
I can never thank them enough.
I went for a doctor visit and again they spoke about doing chemo and radiation.
But my soul and spirit truly believed I was cured. I had to again make
a choice. My faith versus medicine. I had a great struggle within. After
speaking with the medical professionals who said I would die if I didn’t
do this I spoke to my friend who is a Deacon with the church. He told
me God made doctors too and I wouldn’t be going against my faith
If I went ahead with the chemo and radiation. So I switched Oncologists
and met Dr McKeen. I was so impressed with her knowledge and her sense
of caring. With much gratitude she got me through the chemo with no issues.
I then proceeded to do radiation. After time and healing I did my final
reconstruction and thought this was the end of this journey. My cancer
was gone!!! I was a survivor!!
I was good for about a year and then I started not feeling good again.
And I was just recently diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Again,
I am faced with many choices. I am so grateful to once again have Donna’s
support and the care of Dr McKeen. My family and friends are amazing and
I love them so much. I am thankful for all they do. As I begin this new
journey I have chosen to keep the faith, fight the fight, and live my
best life!
