Jupiter Medical Center Surgeons Perform Florida's First Lung and Gynecologic Surgeries With New XI Robot

July 3, 2014

JUPITER, FLA. (July 3, 2014) – Jupiter Medical Center (JMC) became the first health care facility in Florida to perform robotic thoracic surgery and robotic gynecologic surgery using the new da Vinci® Xi™ Surgical System in July 2014. The lung procedure was performed by Dr. K. Adam Lee, Medical Director of the Thoracic Surgery and Lung Center of Excellence at JMC on Tuesday, July 1, 2014. Dr. Donna Pinelli, Medical Director of the Frank E. and Mary D. Walsh Robotic Surgery Program at JMC, performed the state’s first gynecologic procedure on the da Vinci® Xi™ Surgical System on Wednesday, July 2, 2014.

JMC is one of just 10 facilities in the world to have the new Xi unit. Studies have shown that robotic procedures often result in a shorter hospital stay, fewer complications and less blood loss for the patient. Over the past four years, 1,000 robotic surgeries have been performed at JMC.

“These procedures are the latest indicator of Jupiter Medical Center’s tradition of bringing innovative technology and procedures to its patients,” said Dr. Lee, board certified, thoracic surgeon at Jupiter Medical Center. “We are incredibly fortunate to have a strong philanthropic community support; without our donors, the growth of our robotics program wouldn’t be possible.” Dr. Lee is a pioneer in robotic thoracic procedures, having performed the state’s first robotic-assisted thoracic surgery and the nation’s first robotic lung surgery using the four arm technique.

Jupiter Medical Center’s Frank E. and Mary D. Walsh Robotic Surgery Program provides patients with a comprehensive offering of robotic procedures, including general (single-site gallbladder), colorectal, urologic and prostate, thoracic, gynecologic/fertility and gynecologic oncology. This comprehensive offering is not found in most hospitals.

“We had a vision nearly four years ago to bring cutting-edge robotic surgery to Jupiter Medical Center so we could offer our community the latest technology across a broad spectrum of medical specialties,” said Dr. Pinelli, board certified, gynecologic oncologist. “We never stop striving to bring high-quality, world-class care to Palm Beach County.”

The da Vinci® Xi™ Surgical System features robotic hands that can perform surgical tasks beyond the capabilities of human hands, exceeding the natural range of motion. In addition, the Xi offers 3D-HD visualization, giving surgeons a highly magnified view. The da Vinci system can be used across an array of surgeries in urology and gynecology, in addition to thoracic, cardiac and general surgery.
