Frequently Asked Questions: Hyperbarics

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is an adjunctive therapy which increases the amount of oxygen concentration in your blood, allowing the oxygen to pass through the plasma and tissues to the wound site, and promotes your overall healing process.

Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy right for me?

If you have a wound that has not healed in four weeks, consult with the wound center physician to determine if hyperbaric oxygen therapy will be an appropriate part of your overall treatment plan.

What are the indications for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Currently, Medicare has approved hyperbaric oxygen therapy for patients with the following medical conditions, provided they meet established criteria:

  • Diabetic ulcers of the lower extremities
  • Acute peripheral arterial insufficiency
  • Acute traumatic peripheral ischemia Compromised skin grafts
  • Osteoradionecrosis
  • Progressive necrotizing infections
  • Actinomycosis
  • Chronic refractory osteomyelitis
  • Soft tissue radionecrosis
  • Crush injuries
  • Gas gangrene

Non-Wound care indications:

  • Acute CO intoxication
  • Decompression illness
  • Gas embolism
  • Cyanide poisoning
  • Radiation cystitis

Who are the specialists at Jupiter Medical Center?

Our Center is staffed with a unique team of doctors, nurses, and therapists all dedicated to healing chronic wounds. Since the causes of open sores are complex, our group represents expertise in all of the major areas necessary. Whatever it takes for healing to occur, we're equipped to make it happen.

What treatment therapies are available?

At Jupiter Medical Center's Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center, you'll receive the right treatment to heal your wound. Your wound care physician may prescribe some of these therapies:

  • Debridement (removal of dead or damaged tissue)
  • Specially chosen dressings and wraps
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy
  • Bio-engineered tissue substitutes
  • Platelet growth technologies

What kind of results can I expect?

We are expert at caring for people whose open sores have resisted traditional treatment with a success rate of minimum 91% healed in 16 weeks.

Who pays?

Most treatments are covered by Medicare/Medicaid, HMOs and other private insurance plans.

How does the process work?

The physician treating your wound may refer you to our services, or you can make your appointment directly. When you call for your first appointment, we'll ask you a few questions about your wound and overall health.

Before beginning treatment, our team of doctors, nurses and therapists will thoroughly evaluate your wound and review your health and medical history. Tests might be conducted to tell us more about your blood flow and tissue oxygenation and to determine if there's any infection present.

We'll work with your physician to develop a treatment program based on your special needs. Your progress is meticulously documented and treatment adjusted as necessary.

We are in constant communication with your primary care doctor throughout your care. Once your wound is healed, you'll return to your doctor for follow-up care. And of course, you'll continue with your personal doctor for any related ailments like diabetes and hypertension.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

  • A list of current medications you're currently taking as well as any allergies you're aware of
  • Medical records including x-rays if you have them
  • Insurance forms or cards

Is there anything I can do to speed healing?

Yes. Much of the success of your treatment depends on you. We'll count on you to follow directions carefully and watch your progress closely. We'll teach you how to care for your wound at home including how to change dressings and how to protect yourself from further injuries. We're always here to answer questions and give you the support you need to heal.

What are the days and hours of operation?

Monday through Friday 8am - 4:30pm.

The Wound Healing Center is located at 1004 S. Old Dixie Highway, Suite 203 in Jupiter.

How soon should I seek help for a non-healing wound?

Talk to your doctor as soon as you notice a wound that has not healed within two weeks. Early treatment promotes earlier healing, minimizes complications and improves patient outcomes.
