Claudia Alvarez, a Ph.D. candidate in Neuroscience at FAU’s Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute, studies how age-related hearing and balance impairments affect cognition. Her research, conducted in Dr. Ali Danesh’s Hearing, Tinnitus, and Balance Research Lab, explores the relationship between sensory decline and cognitive impairment in Parkinson’s disease and older adults. Findings suggest that combined hearing and vestibular deficits may contribute to cognitive decline, falls, and reduced quality of life. By examining these systems together, Alvarez aims to identify early multisensory markers of cognitive impairment and improve screening and intervention strategies for aging populations.
