I am 57 years old, a widow and mother of a wonderful daughter. I have worked
in the field of cancer for more than 25 years.
My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer thirty years ago at the age
of 48. She did well and lived to be 80 years old. My father was just diagnosed
with breast cancer this year, I am not aware of any other relatives in
my family with this diagnosis.
When my father was diagnosed, I made a decision to have genetic testing.
Since both of my parents had breast cancer, it was important to me to
find out if I was at risk for developing this disease. I also have a daughter
and was concerned about her potential risk as well.
I was fortunate that my test results were negative, and I am not at a higher
risk. While it gave me some peace of mind, I know that I need to be proactive
and have my mammogram each year. If the results had been positive, I would
have taken action to reduce my risk.
This chair represents the importance of knowing your family history and
how it can impact your health and well-being. Knowledge is power. Know
your risk.
