A Team “Works”
As a relatively active wife, mother, and grandmother to a large family,
I understand how important it is to take care of myself. I have always
been diligent about having a yearly mammogram. . Last summer, much to
my radiologist’s surprise a suspicious area showed up on my mammogram.
My doctor was not comfortable and ordered a follow-up appointment in six
months as opposed to waiting another year for a check-up. Again, my doctor
wasn’t comfortable and intuitively suggested that I get a biopsy.
The pathology results of the biopsy showed that I had a slow growing in
situ cancer cell. It was then determined that I would need surgery. I
met with the Niedland Breast Cancer Team and they assured me that I wasn’t
alone and they were there for me at every step of the way. My family stepped
in also; providing guidance, interpretation of medical results, as well
as, another set of eyes and ears. Throughout the diagnosis and treatment
period I wasn’t alone (team work, works). I had a support team of
doctors, professional, and family members. The evidence shows that early
detection is key to survival.
At this point I am a survivor. My treatment is only a daily pill as maintenance
for the next five years.
Thank you to my Professional Team and Family for your support. Thank you
also to my friend and fellow survivor Arlene Oleson for helping me artistically
with this chair.
Message to other women:
Early detection by diligently having yearly mammograms is key to a long
and healthy life.
Theme of my chair
On the seat of this chair is a Roseate Spoonbill a water bird found locally
in Florida. In the 1860’s there were very few of these water birds.
However, conservationists and nature lovers worked together to protect
and ensure their survival of the Spoonbills. They have continued to increase
since the early 1900’s. Recently the Great American Outdoors Act
(2020), a bi-partisan bill, was passed which will guarantee the protection
of these birds. Much like the team that worked to save these birds, I
credit my team - physicians, professionals and family members - with working
to help me beat breast cancer. It takes a team to work together for the
survival of all living beings.
