Tammy Skinner
I am fifty years old, married with two daughters age 18 and 21 and I’m
a massage therapist. I enjoy traveling, baking and walking the beach.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer at ag 49 and had a bilateral mastectomy
with reconstruction. Treatment also included chemotherapy.
Message for other women
Listen to everyone’s story because everyone has a story to tell.
Do not put your own journey onto someone else because everyone processes
differently. Always be grateful and although there may be days where you
are struggling, practice gratitude. Let the superficial stuff go. If your
house is messy so what. Make a choice as to how you will react so you
can simply let it go.
What inspires me through this journey is my faith in Jesus Christ, my family
and friends. Being “other focused” instead of self-focused.
I chose seashells as my theme to represent the uniqueness and beauty that
each shell reveals as with all human beings. There are all kinds of seashells
some are battered, broken and weathered but each one has a story. Each
seashell as with each person’s journey represent a pilgrimage of
their strength, courage and beauty that has transformed them along the
course of life. As a cancer survivor in which I became the day of diagnosis
I have been transformed. Although I may have been battered from chemotherapy
and scared from surgery, this pilgrimage has made me stronger, more courageous,
more insightful, and more grateful. For this I praise God! He has taken
this broken shell and is using it for HIS Glory. The next time you see
a seashell whether whole or broken, I pray you will be mindful of how
we all can be used by God in His perfect timing.
