Two years ago, I was 26, halfway through dental hygiene school, and loving
my life when I found a lump in my breast. My mom passed away from breast
cancer when she was in her 50’s, so I knew I had to be proactive.
Right away, I had an ultrasound and mammogram, and ultimately a biopsy.
I was in Jupiter celebrating my boyfriend’s medical school graduation
with his family, and I had to go back to school in Gainesville the next
day. I waited anxiously for the phone call and was told I had breast cancer.
Genetic revealed that I had the BRCA 1 gene mutation, and I was diagnosed
with triple negative breast cancer, which can be more aggressive and difficult to treat.
The doctors and nurse navigator at Jupiter Medical Center were so nice,
reassuring and caring. I knew this was the team I wanted to take care
of me. I absolutely felt like I was in the best hands. The patient navigator
provided information and was very helpful. I had chemotherapy preoperatively,
followed by a bilateral mastectomy and breast reconstruction.
My doctors genuinely cared. The team worked together to make sure my care
was individualized and that I was content. They knew I was back and forth
between Jupiter and Gainesville for school, and they supported me. I really
developed relationships with these doctors and never questioned their
I graduated a semester late, but two years later I am happy and healthy!
My message to other women
Surround yourself with a medical team you have confidence in and that truly
cares about you. It will make a big difference. Stay strong and go for
your goals, they’re worth it.
