Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic therapy is physical therapy that is performed in the water using the resistance of water instead of weights. The benefit of being underwater is that the body is subject to equal pressure all over. Being underwater decreases weight bearing, allowing individuals who cannot bear weight on land the opportunity to support their body weight with minimal effort. Water can support weak muscles, while enhancing flexibility and range of motion.

The goal of aquatic therapy is to maintain strength, condition and improve overall function. For many patients, water therapy can allow the physical therapist to achieve goals in a shorter time.

Benefits of Aquatic Therapy

  • Reduces the stressful effects of gravity on the body, offering little or no weight bearing
  • Improves range of motion and flexibility, quickly and safely
  • Decreases swelling
  • Improves circulation
