Adrenal Cancer and Adenoma
The adrenal glands are paired organs that are located on top of the kidneys
and control production of certain hormones. Most adrenal tumors, or adenomas,
are non-cancerous (benign) and do not require treatment. Some adrenal
cancers produce no symptoms. Some tumors can cause abdominal pain or hormone
production that lead to breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia), abnormal
hair growth in women or children, high blood sugar/diabetes (hyperglycemia),
and early puberty. Because you essentially need at least one functioning
adrenal gland, an abnormal adrenal gland can be removed by a surgical
oncologist expertise in minimally invasive techniques.
Our surgeons also treat cancers that develop in the adrenal gland, known
as adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC). We also have expertise in treating
very dangerous tumors of the adrenal gland, known as pheochromocytomas,
that can lead to uncontrollable blood pressure and sudden death.
Treatments
Adrenalectomy (removal of the adrenal gland) remains the primary treatment
and the only cure for adrenal cancer.
Laparoscopic adrenalectomy
Considered the surgical standard of care except for large tumors that have
the potential to rupture or spread. Compared to open surgery, laparoscopic
procedures often mean a shorter hospital stay, quicker recovery, and less
pain. Often, you can go home within 24 hours after surgery
