Jupiter, FL June 24, 2025- Jupiter Medical Center is proud to offer the innovative VARIPULSETM platform to deliver pulsed field ablation to treat atrial fibrillation (AFib), making it one of the first health care facilities in Florida to provide this advanced procedure. This revolutionary approach represents a significant leap forward in AFib treatment, a condition characterized by an uncontrolled fluttering or irregular heartbeat, providing patients with a safer, faster, and highly effective option.
Instead of using tiny probes to burn or freeze the defective tissue inside the heart, doctors are now utilizing a method that involves a new type of energy delivery that is ‘minimally thermal.’ This treatment option may be safer for patients as it is less likely to injure tissue in and around the heart. Additionally, this device integrates into 3-D mapping systems to treat atrial fibrillation so ablations can be performed using pulse field technology, eliminating the need for X-rays.
“Pulsed field ablation is the latest advancement in ablation technology,” explains Dr. David Weisman, a board-certified, fellowship-trained cardiac electrophysiologist. “The procedure involves short bursts of high-energy pulses that are minimally thermal and more tissue-selective, specifically for the heart tissue. As cardiac specialists, we can more safely destroy the tissue inside the heart causing irregular heartbeats while still achieving the same or better results as previous technologies.”
Pulsed field ablation was approved as a new treatment in 2024, joining two other commonly used treatments to destroy the tissue that causes irregular heartbeats. They include tissue-freezing cryotherapy probes and radiofrequency/heat probes that burn away the defective tissue inside the heart. Both cryotherapy and radiofrequency/heat approaches can carry specific risks, including freezing or burning of tissue inside and surrounding the heart, and touching/burning nearby organs and tissues, including the esophagus and the phrenic nerve, which controls the diaphragm and breathing.
Notably, pulsed field ablation is a same-day procedure offering quicker treatment times than traditional methods such as cryotherapy and radiofrequency ablation. Dr. Weisman and his team performed the hospital’s first PFA procedures in early 2025, marking a new era in AFib care for the region.
“Offering pulsed field ablation reinforces our commitment to enhancing patient outcomes through state-of-the-art technology,” said Amit Rastogi, MD, MHCM, President and CEO of Jupiter Medical Center. “Jupiter Medical Center is dedicated to being at the forefront of innovation in health care, and this is another example of our efforts to ensure our community has the highest quality, safety and patient experience.”
