Are You a Candidate for Knee Surgery?
Surgery is recommended for many reasons including:
- Severe knee pain or stiffness that limits everyday activities, including, walking, climbing stairs, and getting in and out of chairs
- Walking more than a few blocks without significant pain and/or the need to use a cane or walker
- Moderate or severe knee pain while resting, either day or night
- Chronic knee inflammation and swelling that does not improve with rest or medications
- Knee deformity, such as a knee that bows out or in
- Failure to respond to other treatments (e.g., anti-inflammatory medications, cortisone injections, lubricating injections, physical therapy, other surgery)
Most total knee replacements involve patients ages 50-80, but surgery decisions are based primarily on your level of pain and disability. Total knee replacements have been performed successfully at all ages, from teens with juvenile arthritis to the elderly patient with degenerative arthritis.
Each patient is evaluated individually. You and your surgeon will decide when the time is right for knee surgery.
